THE FILM

This film isn’t about solving a murder or stopping a monster. It’s a slow-burn seduction of the audience, mirroring how Nate seduces Kate, then turns the mirror into a knife.

Kate is a chilling psychological thriller that dissects the banality of evil through the eyes of Nate, a charismatic high school golden boy whose poetic musings mask a monstrous reality. Told through his meticulously crafted diary entries, the film unfolds like a twisted romance—lavish with nostalgia and floral-scented fantasies—until the moment Kate, his latest obsession, rejects him. What begins as a wistful recollection of "the good old days" spirals into violence, revealing Nate’s true nature: a serial killer who archives his victims as love stories, their names etched alongside roses in his grotesque collection.

With its non-linear structure and unreliable narration, Kate lures the audience into Nate’s delusion, blurring the line between romance and horror. The film’s tension lies not in whether he’ll kill, but in how long it takes us to realize we’ve been rooting for a monster. Stark contrasts—sun-drenched picnics versus bloodstained pages, tender voiceovers versus brutal acts—force viewers to confront their own complicity in romanticizing predators. By the final frame, the title Kate becomes a grim punchline: just another replaceable name on a shelf, her story rewritten as Nate’s souvenir.

THE PROJECT

Why this movie?

Since the very beginning, Charles, Ciaran and Daniel knew they didn't want just any old movie, they wanted a movie that was different, a movie that was innovative, a movie that broke boundaries and was unique in many ways. They had already done early work but it was basic. With the addition of Ciaran and then Mina and Shriya the project was on.

With new additions to the team, the 5 refined and remodelled the original idea into a full-blown Hollywood-scale idea. The challenge was getting the story to fit into 7 minutes. The team had to cut parts and change the story as the unit progressed to accommodate the requirements that the film festival imposed. However the limitations they did their very best to transfer one legendary Idea into a short film.

THE CREW

A team of students crafted to perfection, a blend of creative, hard-working and smart.

The team started way back in January, with the final movie prominent, Daniel and Charles started meeting after school and working on some possible ideas for movies and designing a Character called Nate and a Girlfriend, which eventually became the central piece to the movie as you know it. Ciaran was the next to join, and he brought a creative and abstractly different view to our ideas.

Shriya and Mina joined after; the strongest students of our class concentrated into one team. Everyone is bringing their own added value. The team looked through the year and balanced talent and passion to find the right roles for each person. The basic plan for the roles never changed; however, due to a lack of actors, Daniel had to step up to play 'Nate'.  We had to adapt and fill in for the empty boots, which created an extra challenge. It wasn't easy, but we took turns, adapted, and evolved, and everyone's hard work made this movie possible.

THE CAST

A cast, hand-picked by the executive team and trained to the Best.

Since the beginning the whole crew knew that to play these 2 roles we would need world class actors. At first glance we looked at stars like Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, however, the budget gave us a heads up and reminded us this was a school production. The hunt was on, about 20 movies and only a finite number of actors available. â€‹

We held auditions and from that moment 2 people stood out like an elephant amongst Zebras. Stella Hansen and Daniel Stevenson. Both drama students, and little did we know, they had Oscar-deserving acting in them. They deliver an electric performance with depth, emotion, and chemistry seen in so little productions, even certain Hollywood productions.
